Setting up CnCNet

A big thanks to Nyerguds for making this guide more understandable!

This is a step by step guide on how to play on CnCNet, don't get scared by the amount of information it is easier than it might seem; this guide is detailed. We strongly recommend that you use Nyerguds' C&C95 v1.06b revision 2 patch when you play on CnCNet, or anywhere...

If you already have the .NET framework and are "experienced" with computers you can skip to step 3 or 4

Step 1. Download Microsoft .NET framework 4.0. Once the download is complete, start the installer and follow the instructions.

Step 2. Download CnCNet (from the Downloads page at this site). Once the download is complete, start the CnCNet installer and follow the instructions to install the program.

Step 3. Start CnCNet. If an update message appears, do the update and restart the program. Click on Edit Options, select C&C95 path (by clicking on the empty space) browse to the folder where you installed C&C95, and click ok.

Step 4a. - If you are certain that your router does not support UPNP, you can skip to step 4b for the manual configuration.
Download this tool and save it somewhere. Start it and and click on "Get all port mappings". If your router supports UPNP, then the message shown in the text box should contain the text "A Router Device Responded with UPNP URL". If this doesn't work, skip to step 4b. Else, click the "Map My Port"button. If all goes well, you should get message ending with this text:

  • Port: 8054
  • Lease Duration: Forever
  • Description: CnCNet
  • Enabled: 1
You should now be able to host and join games on CnCNet. If it didn't work, continue to step 4b.

Step 4b. If you successfully completed step 4a, you do not have to do this.
This is probably the most difficult part, forwarding the port. The usual way to do this is:

  1. Press the windows button on your keyboard and r (win + r)
  2. Type "cmd" in the window that appears and press enter.
  3. In the black console, type "ipconfig" and press enter.
  4. Look for the "default gateway" for your active connection (the one with an IP address/subnet usually).
  5. Type that gateway IP address in your Browser address bar.
  6. You will either be presented with a Username/password or a webpage with options.
  7. Since routers are all different, go to portforward.com and look yours up. Follow the instructions on how to access your router and how to forward ports there-
    Forward the following Protocol/Port:
    PROTOCOL: UDP
    PORT: 8054
if your router can't be found at portforward.com, you will have to find an option that mentions something like "NAT", "Port forwarding", "Virtual server", or "Forwarding", and figure out how to forward the port yourself.

Some things to keep in mind when using CnCNet

  • Join the Player Lobby to find players. The lobby exists to meet up and organise games. Simply making a game and waiting for players to join usually doesn't work.
  • It is recommended that all players in one game are on the same continent. If you are in the USA and are playing against someone from Australia, then the game is doomed to go slowly.
  • Increasing the game speed doesn't solve lag.
  • Different game versions cause Out Of Sync errors.
  • If no one is online in the chat room, post on the forums if you need help.

The CnCNet tray Icon. This will explain the different statuses seen on the C&CNet tray icon, and the menus and messages it can show.
  - Not connected.
  - Connected
  - Reciving packets, (indication that CnCNet is 100% or atleast 99% working) it starts blinking when you start C&C95
  - Connection error

When you hover over the icon it shows the the number of people that are currently connected to CnCNet. Note that your own information is not added to this counter. The number in the brackets (The "( )" symboles) are the number of people you recive packets from.

Right click on the CnCNet icon to get this menu. It is strongly recommended that you join the Player Lobby to find people to play with.

  1. Edit options - Takes you to the options screen, here you can:
    - Allow CnCNet to start when Windows Starts
    - Enable/disable the experimental automatic port forwarding
    - See your IP addresses
    - Select the path to the C&C95 folder
  2. Who's Online? - Displays the nicknames people are using ingame andwhat country they are from; get more info from the "What is in this box?" links in the Who's Online Window
  3. Check for updates - checks if there is an update for CnCNet (CnCNet does this everytime you start the program too)
  4. Player lobby - Where you find people to play with or just have a chat.
  5. Launch C&C95 - Takes you directly to the CnC95 network lobby

  8. How to play - Takes you to the guide you are reading right now! :)
  9. How to forward port - "Same as how to play"
  10. Exit - closes CnCNet
You can switch out of the game (using alt-tab) while waiting for players. A message will tell you when someone has joined your game:
This message appears when someone has hosted a game. The country indication can tell you if a player is too far away from you to have smooth gameplay. game hosted
